Martial has enjoyed his most prolific season at Manchester United last year, netting 17 goals in the league and 23 in all competitions.
While the French forward has typically been deployed as a left winger, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opted to mould Martial into a typical number 9. While he has not always looked comfortable in this position it is clear to see he is making progress and his hold up play and ability to score ‘scrappy goals’ is finally improving. While Giroud is often deployed as Didier Deschamps preferred forward, Martial’s versatility gives him options with his lineup.
Martial will be slightly disappointed to only have 18 appearances for Les Bleus, most notably missing out on the 2018 World Cup winning squad. But, at 24 Martial can still cement his spot in the French side.
After a season of great form, his call up to the national side is well deserved and hopefully an opportunity he can grasp with both hands to cement himself into an excellent French side.
Deschamps speaking on Martial’s inclusion said: “Since the World Cup, three or four times he [Martial] was due to be part of our squad, for various different reasons it didn’t happen – with what he has been doing since last season – now he is back in the squad.”
With such a talented French side, will Martial do enough to keep his place?
